I would like to nominate Shawn from the kitchen for employee of the month. He always goes above and beyond to meet our patient’s needs; he does what he can to accommodate in any way possible to please the patients while paying attention to prescribed diets and personal preferences. He has the most upbeat positive attitude with staff while responding to requests. He is a wonderful team player and asset to our community here at the hospital. I would like to nominate Shawn from the kitchen! He is very helpful and assisting with all of the patient’s needs and making sure everyone is taken care of!
Personal Attributes
Where did you grow up, and what brought you to your current city?
I grew up in the beautiful city of Lviv in western Ukraine which has a rich history dating back to 1256. When I came to the US, my husband and I lived in San Diego for a year. But we really wanted to move to Northern California and find a place that has four seasons. When we were driving through Weaverville, we met amazing people and we loved the clean air and water and the gorgeous nature. We decided that this is the perfect place to live and raise a family.
What is a fun fact about you that may surprise people?
Music plays a big part in my life. I play the Ukrainian national instrument, the Bandura – it has 55 strings. All my kids were introduced to music and play various instruments. I like to go to concerts, theaters, and art galleries. I also enjoy gardening and baking Ukrainian desserts.
What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?
I believe the best advice comes from Jesus in the Golden Rule: “Treat others, as you would have them treat you.”
Career Journey
What drew you to this field, and how did you get started?
I was drawn to the pharmacy field because I like helping people manage their medications and improve their health. I graduated from the Pharmacy Faculty of the Lviv National Medical University. Later, I worked there as a pharmacist. I also worked for a few years as a Quality Control manager at the Coca-Cola company – they paid 10 times more than a pharmacist! In Weaverville, I worked as a pharmacy technician at the Trinity Professional Pharmacy, then at CVS and now almost 9 years at the Trinity Hospital pharmacy.
What is your favorite memory from working here?
I am always happy for patients that recover here and are able to return home!
Who would your ideal mentor be?
My ideal mentor is my mom because she leads by example. She taught me to believe in God and instilled in me strong values. She taught me discipline, responsibility, and how to stay focused on my goals.
Perspective on the Organization
What is it about this job and company that appealed to you?
Our Trinity Hospital is a very important part of this community – it saves lives! It saved my mom and my son. Without it, many people would choose not to live here, as access to health care is essential. We have a very good team and the administration is supportive of its employees. It’s an honor to work at our hospital.

The DAISY Award® is a special honor given to extraordinary nurses for the compassionate contributions they make every day going above and beyond expectations in science and sensitivity.
Congratulations to
Here's what her nominators said about her:
Patient/Visitor:
We came to visit our father and brought his grandkids. They had lots of energy and the nurse brought over some crayons and coloring pages to help entertain them so we could peacefully visit our loved one. Very helpful and thoughtful! Im a firefighter and paramedic and have lots of experience with patient care and also customer service and she performed both amazingly.
Colleague:
I would like to nominate Kathryn “Katie” Cyr for Employee of the Month. She has consistently demonstrated flexibility, willingness to cover when needed, and never hesitates to give a helping hand, no matter where it is asked, including our organizational social media accounts! She has assisted with critical situations in ER, volunteered to stay over to cover shifts so her fellow staff members who live farther away are able to get home, and she also was a great assist over the holiday weeks when there was an insurmountable amount of call offs among the nursing staff. She has a great attitude and never complains about which department or shift she is asked to work; she is a very appreciated team player.

Share your story of what your nurse has meant to you, and your nurse may be selected to receive this very meaningful recognition.
