As MCHD's Maintenance Lead, Dan sets such a high standard for the rest of us with his professionalism, but what really stands out is how he does it all with such a great attitude. He's genuinely kind, always easy to talk to, and somehow stays calm and collected even when something urgent pops up out of nowhere. Speaking of urgent—I recently threw a last-minute renovation project at him for a space in Financial Services. He didn't even hesitate. He jumped right in, worked tirelessly, and got the whole thing done on time without disrupting anyone's work. It was such a huge help and made the space so much better for the team. We are lucky to have him. His dedication makes a real difference around here, and I hope we can recognize him for it.
Personal Attributes
Where did you grow up, and what brought you to your current city?
I grew up in Junction City, Ca and have lived in Trinity County most of my life. I enjoy being here in the mountains and living in a small town.
What is a fun fact about you that may surprise people?
I enjoy gardening and raising chickens and ducks in my time off. My kid's enjoy helping me and they are learning life skills to continue in their adulthood.
What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?
The best advice I ever got was learning from a young age to always take care of my responsibilities. This instilled independence and responsibility in me that I continue today.
Career Journey
What drew you to this field, and how did you get started?
I had an interest in Nursing in college and then started in healthcare as a CNA through Trinity Hospital’s CNA program. As a CNA I also was part of the RNA program. Eventually I moved to Social Services Designee / Ward clerk for the Skilled Nursing Facility and I am now the Administrative Assistant.
What is your favorite part about your job and why?
My favorite part of my job is that I get to be an advocate for our residents. This is very rewarding and I can help people who can’t always help themselves. I am sometimes someone to lean on or bring their problems to and can be their voice during these times.
Who would your ideal mentor be?
My mentor growing up was my dad. He taught me many things from mechanics to fixing anything and everything. He instilled in me how to be a hard worker and to always stand up for myself and take care of your obligations. I continue these life skills today with my own children as I feel it really shaped me into who I am today.
Perspective on the Organization
What is your favorite memory from working here?
My favorite memories are with the residents who made the biggest impact over the last 12 years. In this role, you build real relationships with your residents. I have gained what I consider many friends and helped a lot of people being here at the Skilled Nursing Facility.

The DAISY Award® is a special honor given to extraordinary nurses for the compassionate contributions they make every day going above and beyond expectations in science and sensitivity.

Here's what her nominators said about her:
Heidi Johnson, FNP:
Angie was asked to help with a patient's pain and anxiety management at the end of life and did such a beautiful job of helping the patient pass peacefully. She answered the patient's significant other's questions, comforted both he and the patient, and overall assured that this end-of-life patient had a peaceful passing.

I would like to nominate Angie for the Daisy Award, recognizing her for her compassion and dedication to improving the lives of others. Angie embodies the spirit of kindness and empathy that is truly inspiring. She creates an environment of trust and healing that uplifts everyone around her. Angie gets to know each and every one of her patients, she will sit with them, hold their hand and listens. You can hear her laughter coming from her patient's rooms. I'll watch her. She plays cards, puts puzzles together, and even finds them donated clothes. One time she went home and got a pair of shoes for a patient who had none. Today one of her patients wanted a piece of cherry pie. He was very happy! in Angie we see the very best of what a nurse can be. Compassionate healer, and unwavering advocate to all. It is an honor to nominate Angie VandenPlas, RN for this well-deserved recognition.
Angie’s compassion, dedication and genuine care for her patients, colleagues, and community make this award so well deserved. Congratulations, Angie!!!
