I would like to recommend Kristin D. for employee of the month and year. Since I’ve been here Kristin has made me feel like part of the Radiology team. She never hesitated to answer the phone if I had a question. She has an infectious personality and is missed when she takes off. She has always shown patience and professionalism while explaining radiology procedures, and introducing me to fellow staff, and in the community. She is an example of kindness and caring to patients and helps them relax during radiology exams; I’ve witnessed countless times patients are smiling when Kristin has finished. She is a vital part of the Radiology department and the Hospital. Again, I would like to recommend Kristin for employee of the month and year.

Personal Attributes

Where did you grow up, and what brought you to your current city?

I have lived the majority of my life in Shasta County, though I am fairly well-traveled and have seen over half of the states in the US. No matter where I go, and what ventures I pursue, I always seem to find my way back to Redding and Shasta as a whole.

What is a fun fact about you that may surprise people?

I dabble in many things. I enjoy dissecting complex films, and chewing through dense books of all kinds. I cannot imagine a life without music, and I am usually found humming or singing without being conscious of it. I’m a huge history buff, and I would not recommend getting me started, I have no self-control and won’t stop when I get rolling!

What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?

Do your absolute best to make two people smile every single day, and one of them must be yourself.

Career Journey

What drew you to this field, and how did you get started?

I grew up food insecure, and was left to cook for my siblings a lot when I was younger. It gradually became a love language for me, and it brings me a lot of joy to provide a tasty meal to those around me as an expression of affection to the world.

What is your favorite part about your job and why?

Cooking is a little like Jazz… you often need to improvise a little. I relish an opportunity to get a little creative in the kitchen and dish up something for the patients to enjoy. Our patients are usually not having an exceptionally good time, nobody enjoys being sick, but a good meal can sometimes make a big impact. It is my privilege to provide that.

Is there anything people don’t understand about your job that you wish they did?

A normal kitchen is already an exercise in controlled chaos, and the kitchen of a hospital is doubly so. The menu may reflect a simple dinner, but when you have six different dietary constraints joining a myriad list of preferences and dislikes, any dinner can become very pressing. In my case, I do my best under pressure. The kitchen naturally electrifies me.

Perspective on the Organization

What about this job and company appealed to you?

I can’t think of anyone else who needs a good meal more than the sick. Couple that with a small town, and it allows you to build a sense of community that you otherwise might not get in a much larger hospital or restaurant.

The DAISY Award® is a special honor given to extraordinary nurses for the compassionate contributions they make every day going above and beyond expectations in science and sensitivity.

Congratulations to

Angela VandenPlas, RN!

Angela VandenPlas, RN!

Angela VandenPlas, RN!

Here's what her nominators said about her:

Heidi Johnson, FNP:

Angie was asked to help with a patient's pain and anxiety management at the end of life and did such a beautiful job of helping the patient pass peacefully. She answered the patient's significant other's questions, comforted both he and the patient, and overall assured that this end-of-life patient had a peaceful passing.

Anonymous:

I would like to nominate Angie for the Daisy Award, recognizing her for her compassion and dedication to improving the lives of others.  Angie embodies the spirit of kindness and empathy that is truly inspiring.  She creates an environment of trust and healing that uplifts everyone around her.  Angie gets to know each and every one of her patients, she will sit with them, hold their hand and listens.  You can hear her laughter coming from her patient's rooms.  I'll watch her.  She plays cards, puts puzzles together, and even finds them donated clothes.  One time she went home and got a pair of shoes for a patient who had none.  Today one of her patients wanted a piece of cherry pie.  He was very happy!  in Angie we see the very best of what a nurse can be.  Compassionate healer, and unwavering advocate to all.  It is an honor to nominate Angie VandenPlas, RN for this well-deserved recognition.

Angie’s compassion, dedication and genuine care for her patients, colleagues, and community make this award so well deserved.  Congratulations, Angie!!!
